The Anomic Arcadia Collection.

A dystopian novel book set.

Comprised of three correlated dystopian novels, The Anomic Arcadia collection is a book set that inspires readers to think deeply about their conception of society and its rules. Because each novel was written by separate authors with differing takes on societal shifts, I “branded” the collection and created an adaptable typographic and illustrative system that ties the set together.

Order and intention are necessary tools to oppress each protagonist. In Fahrenheit 451, fire stands in opposition to freedom. In Brave New World, the widely distributed drug “soma” creates relief from, and ultimately a barrier to sentience.  And those in The Disposessed percieve political and geographical divides as too great to overcome, putting preservation over progress.

Not only does the visual system work together to create cohesion, it is also appropriate for depicting the way in which power must be maintained within each imagined society. The illustrative and typographic elements reference technical drawings to give the sense that there is of course someone who benefits from these oppressive systems, and that we, like those we read about, can have an analytical eye toward the systems by which our society functions as well.
